Cedar Chest

This years project was again an attempt to be a practical useful one. There are eleven homemade 1/4 inch thick panels. Each panel was made with hand selected pieces for eye appeal, with the bottom panels as an exception. In the front three panels, the middle two pieces of each are book matched out of the same block of tree. Each end panel also has book matched pieces. The three supports, together with the piano hinge, hold the lid up hands free. The four sides and bottom of the inside are lined with aromatic cedar. A divider of aromatic cedar is also included. As always, two coats of oil and three coats of varnish.

This item was entered into the Minnesota State Fair and was awarded 4th place.

Side Tables

[small table cross bars]

[large table cross bars]

[leg detail]

The best part of these tables is the grain in the wood. The wood of major branches of the tree create burl-like grain details. I found ways to incorporate this grain detail in the tables. After sanding to 320 grit, I assembled them. Between each of the 2 coats oil and 3 coats polyurethane, I hand sanded with 400 grit and carefully tack clothed each surface.
These tables will compliment any living room or can be used as bedside tables.

Four tables total; made to be sold as a set.
All four are approx. 2' tall
Two 24" wide
One 32" wide
One 36" wide

The panels in these privacy screens are handmade. In making them I took the time to book match when I could. All pieces were then sanded to 320 grit before assembly. Then I put 2 coats oil and 3 coats polyurethane, hand sanding and using tack cloth between coats. These pieces can be used as a privacy screen in any room or hide something like an unused fireplace.

Screen one details:
Approximately 54" tall. In total there are 4 panels.

Screen two details:
Approximately 48" tall at the top of the curve. In total there are 5 panels with two way hinges.

Gun Cabinet

[front view]

[view of the lit lake scene in leaded glass]

[side view of gun supports]

[drawer detail]

[back piano doors]

Wow! This gun cabinet is made with loving care. More than 400 hours of time was put into the building of it.

All panels and quarter round are handmade. The drawers are made of black walnut throughout. The details included dove-tailed corners, false bottoms, 100 pound full extension drawer slides and the fronts made of one piece of wood, sawed and glued together to get a special look.

The supports to hold the weapons are 2 1/2” thick and 5 1/2” wide solid walnut; cut so barrels are level to limit oil movement. The back has piano-hinged bifold-paneled doors and is completely finished to all 4-sided exposure.

This cabinet is a show piece. Behind the weapons is a lake scene in leaded glass. About 13 square feet of cooper foil in the 3 scenes. The four 18” florescent bulbs back light the day time scene highlighting the massive tree. A mini bulb illuminates sunrise portion and a second mini bulb softly creates a full moonlit night. All have their own switch. Your choice of mix and match.

After assembly, before installing glass and lights, I finished with 2 coats oil throughout, hand sanding with 400 grit, and tack clothed between each coat. I hand rubbed 3 coats of polyurethane.

This piece needs a large room; it weighs approximately 500 pounds.
